Engineering a More Sustainable Future
April 22, 2026
Earth Day is a reminder that sustainability is not just about ideas, it’s about action. At Holland, sustainability is built into the way we support our customers every day, through a focus on practical innovations that improve rail performance while reducing material waste, energy consumption, and unnecessary replacement. Learn more about our advanced welding technologies and repair solutions that deliver real environmental impact alongside proven performance.
Holland Automated Manganese Repair (HAMR®)
Holland’s Automated Manganese Repair (HAMR®) utilizes robotically controlled welding procedures to rebuild damaged areas on rail frogs and crossing diamonds. HAMR’s precision delivers higher-quality, more consistent repairs compared to traditional manual methods.
Recent performance data shows HAMR® repairs lasting over a year, reducing the frequency of rework, material consumption, and downtime. By extending component life and minimizing replacement needs, HAMR® supports a more sustainable approach to rail maintenance.
Intelliweld® Gauge Corner Restoration (GCR)
Holland’s Intelliweld® Gauge Corner Restoration (GCR) machine provides railways with a proven, sustainable alternative to rail replacement. This automated submerged arc welding solution is designed for in-situ restoration of side-worn embedded grooved rails, rebuilding the gauge corner to restore the original rail profile.
GCR significantly extends asset life while reducing the environmental and financial costs associated with full rail removal and replacement, keeping materials in service longer and lowering overall resource consumption.
Holland Hybrid Welder®
The Holland Hybrid Welder® combines the industry-leading capabilities of a traditional MobileWelder® with a battery-powered welder head, enabling high-quality flash-butt welds in a more sustainable package.
By reducing fuel consumption and emissions while maintaining Holland’s weld quality standards, the Hybrid Welder® supports cleaner operations without compromising performance, helping railways meet sustainability goals while maintaining critical infrastructure.
Short Plug Flash-Butt Welding
Holland’s short plug flash-butt welding solution offers railways a higher-quality and more cost-effective method for defect remediation and rail repair. Using 5-foot rail plugs, the process requires just two pieces of equipment and a total of four employees (railroad and Holland combined).
This efficient approach reduces material waste, labor requirements, and track time while delivering the high-quality welds Holland is known for, making it both an operational and environmental improvement over traditional repair methods.
Innovation That Supports a More Sustainable Rail Network
From automated restoration to energy-efficient welding platforms, Holland’s technologies are designed to do more with less – less material, less energy, and less waste – to support a more sustainable future for the rail industry.
