Engineer Spotlight: Matthew Morrone

Engineer Spotlight: Matthew Morrone

February 22, 2022

Happy Engineers Week! This week we’re highlighting a few of our engineers to give you a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to be a part of Holland! Meet Matthew Morrone, one of our Product Engineers for Holland’s Transportation Technology division. This division focuses on product securement for goods traveling on many types of rail cars. Although Matt started with us just 3 months ago, we’re so happy to have him on board! Learn more about Matt and his journey to Holland below!

What did you originally want to be when you grew up?

I’ve always been interested in math and science.  I have also always been good at fixing things and working with my hands.  Mechanical engineering checked all those boxes.

Where did you go to college and what led you there?

Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE).  Class sizes and school stats all fit the bill.

What was your major / why did you choose engineering?

My major was Mechanical Engineering.  This degree seemed like it fit well with my interests and skill set.

What led you to a career with Holland?

I worked in rail for my internships during college and after graduation.  I was looking for a career change and Holland seemed like a good fit.

Describe your average day:

I’m still learning the ropes.  I have my hands in an R&D project that I’m very excited about. Working through a lot of bugs on the shop floor and trouble shooting different problems that come up. I also have been doing my fair amount of paperwork and incoming inspection.

What is one of your favorite things about working in the rail industry?

I think working with big heavy equipment is cool. Other fields do innovative and interesting things, but not many do it at such a large scale. Also, the opportunity to do field work as well as traditional engineering work is everywhere which makes for a nice balance.

What’s one thing you wish someone working in the engineering field would have told you when you were going to school?

Be prepared to answer 50 emails a day and still have time to design something useful.

What is one of your favorite things about working at Holland?

The opportunity to have my hands in multiple different departments is exciting.  My previous job was very tunneled and focused on one specific thing.  Here I have the opportunity to see and contribute to all aspects of the business.

We’re so glad to have you on our team, Matt!
